MUTUI: USA, SI E' DIMESSO IL MINISTRO DELLA CASA
(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 31 mar - Il ministro della Casa dell'
gestione dell'emergenza casa.
(ANSA).

E l'inflazione continua ad alzarsi.........
INFLATION AT 12-YEAR HIGH, RECORD PRICE JUMP IN EURO ZONE
(ANSA) - Rome, March 31 - Inflation in Italy hit a
12-year high of 3.3% this month, compared to March of last
year, while in the euro zone year-on-year prices jumped by
the most since the introduction of the single currency in
1999.
Italy's national statistics bureau Istat observed that
prices were driven up by the high cost of fuel products and
those made from wheat, including bread and pasta.
The European Union's statistics bureau, Eurostat, said
that inflation in the euro zone had set new records for the
past four months in a row.
The March increase was greater than had been expected and
a spokesman for Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner
Joaquin Almunia said "this is not good. What we have to do
now is make sure this does not create a price-salary
spiral".
"Given the current high level of crude oil prices, this
latest inflation data did not take us by surprise, even if it
was greater than our forecast made last month," the
spokesman added.
News of the greater-than-expected jump in euro zone
inflation pushed the single currency above $1.58, while the
euro also gained on the British pound, trading at 79.68
pence, and Japanese yen, 156.93 yen.
Italian consumer groups were particularly alarmed over
the hike in inflation, while farmers' associations pointed
out that the steep increase for wheat products was not the
result of farmers demanding more for the commodity.
Compared to March of last year, pasta prices were up 17%
while bread prices jumped 10.5%, with relative gains of 3%
and 0.7% over February.
Diesel fuel this month was 20.2% dearer than March 2007,
while gasoline prices climbed 12.7% and home heating fuels
jumped 21%.
Home fuels and diesel also recorded the greatest price
increases over last month, 4.9% and 4.8% respectively.
The outgoing environment minister, Green party leader
Alfonso Pecorarop Scanio, said on Monday that "the high cost
of living is the number one national problem that must be
tackled. Tomorrow the cabinet will move to freeze planned
price hikes for electricity and gas".
The Italian Confederation of Farmers (Cia) said the jump
in inflation was "extremely alarming and measures must be
adopted to block unjustified prices increases and
speculation".
According to the farmers' association, prices increased
tenfold from the farm to the table and the best way to combat
overpricing was to show consumers the price of the product at
its origin .
"This is the best deterrent to the unjustified increases
in food prices which are fueling inflation and having a
negative effect on the consumer," Cia said.
The national retailers' association Confcommercio said
the hike in inflation was "foreseeable and not unexpected"
and that the upward trend in prices in Italy placed in line
with the rest of Europe.
The retailers' association added that the situation will
get worse before it gets better because of high oil prices.
This pessimistic forecast was backed up by Istat's report
on Monday that producer prices last month were 5.7% higher
than February 2007 and rose 0.7% over January.
Without calculating energy costs, producer prices in
February were 3.4% higher than a year before and up 0.5% for
the month.
The consumers' group Adusbef blamed big business and
Italy's leading political parties for rekindling inflation,
which it warned risked becoming once again double-digit.
"The irresponsibility of the leading parties and the
fact that they are subservient to major financial powers,
which make great profits through inflation, has placed us on
track towards double-digit inflation," Adusbef said.
Antonio Lirosi, the government anti-inflation watchdog,
said on Monday that in order to combat inflation it was
important to "offer incentives to those actions which help
contain prices, something which we have begun to do on both a
national and local level".
